@jrcarpenter there's also the classic (maybe apocryphal? I don't know things) example of elephant skulls inspiring the myth of the cyclops

@jrcarpenter someone made the argument that if you take a hippo's skull and try to reconstruct the flesh and skin you will end up with a totally different animal.
@jrcarpenter For marine animals where gravity plays much less of a role, I think you have a great point here. For terrestrial ones, bones really matter to keep the flesh up in place.
@jrcarpenter it was the case thought most of paleontology's time. But as far as I know nowadays we have a pretty certain assumption of how dinosaurs were.
