Is Mastodon really that hard for non-technical people to figure out or do people just dislike having to learn new things? Is it really that confusing that there's no single "mastodon.com" website? It seems to me that people don't want to invest 10 minutes into actually reading up on what federated social media is all about.

Idk, I just used the app, tbh.

@dusnm Software engineer here and I had to spend 15 minutes figuring it out. I think your avg Joe has no idea about federal servers. So in that regards is confusing. People just want to sign up and go on about their day. Can people learn? sure but it will take some time.

Also your typical joe is used to the algorithm so another thing to overcome. Can people follow topics here?

@thefern With the most recent update you can now follow hashtags. I guess that counts as following topics. Just search for a hashtag and in the top right there should be a button to follow it.
@dusnm Nice! I'll add some and I should be all set. Thanks!
@thefern Now, back to the topic at hand. I'm a software engineer myself and I'd say I really got the hang of it in about an hour. The largest hurdle wasn't the federated nature of the service, I got that right away, it was a lack of an algorithmic feed, which in hindsight is a good decision, but I got around it by browsing the local and federated timelines looking for interesting people.
@dusnm Yeah for me, I've always built my own lists on Twitter even the home feed had garbage at times. I think if there's a guided onboarding process, people will join more easily which should be the ultimate goal.
