@atomicpoet @Rairii But it doesn't run, nor should it run, most of the instances. Communities should fund instances, sure, but let's not recentralize.

I'd love to see a split between donations to that specific instance and donations to development.

Anyone benefits from improvements to the software.

And donating to one thing doesn't exclude donating to the other thing. I donate to both the development, the instance I'm using, and other open source projects.

@CodexNotFound there's other server software! there's akkoma and misskey and calckey and even things like pixelfed and peertube which aren't microblogging platforms at all!

@Rairii @CodexNotFound while I agree that alternative software needs to be supported and mastodon.social maybe should close registrations for the greater good, that simply not how humanity works. Yes, rededucation can (and should) be done to get people to think but right now the way it works is just the way it works. Maybe I'm getting cynical on my old days
