People on Servers with Mastodon 4+ (? not sure when this feature was added tbh)

Try out this setting instead of begging people you follow to CW innocuous things you don't like seeing like "selfie"

Go to settings / filters and make a new one using the "hide with a warning" option.

Now YOU get a warning, and people don't need to do it for you

@masklayer That still requires the post to contain the word 'selfie' in it somewhere, though, to match in that example. I feel like if it were to work properly, people would still need to tag their stuff...

That said I am all for rebranding CWs as 'tags' or something and then having per-user filters on said tags where it can render *as* a CW, or just display it, or yeet it from the timeline entirely, etc.

But the onus is still on the poster to tag their stuff correctly.

@kithop @masklayer I've mostly seen it in response to fursuit pics and most of them seem to say it somewhere in the post at least

@ceralor @masklayer Yeah, I was thinking 'what if hashtags were dynamic CWs' but that also implies a discoverability thing that overloads what a hashtag is. You don't necessarily want your 'mh (-)' posts showing up as a trending hashtag (or maybe you do, but that should be its own decision).

I'm personally of the 'verbose as heck CW' mentality, but then screen readers and people with RSI having to 'show more' their entire timeline... Ugh. No great fixes yet.

@masklayer actual good feature
@masklayer mostly bc i think that adding a hashtag is more intuitive to people and a lot of folks are already tagging things with hashtags from twitter, so hopefully this reduces some friction 😵
@masklayer But you can’t detect if there’s direct eye contact in the pic :(
@ignis @masklayer I've said elsewhere, but I think the same tools that are useful for content discovery can be the same tools useful for filtering. Increased use of hashtags at the end of posts would be really helpful for everyone, and encouraging that culture is a net positive.
@masklayer Filters have been in for a number of versions now! I actually wrote up a quick guide for the three most common fedi softwares a year ago to teach how to set it up https://wireless.cat6.network/notice/A38vUzSvDZI... but it looks like masto's changed the UI a bit

hey you can set up filters in most fediverse software, allowing you to control what sorts of posts you do not see, allowing you to curate your experience here on the network. Specific phrases for ...

@masklayer Do we know if this setting works on third party apps like tusky and metatext? i cant stand the web app or the official app.
@masklayer oh wow that sounds like a nice addition feature!
Hopefully easy for 3rd party apps to support
