I’m ok with this so far. First it’s not as addicting as Twitter and second the convos are pretty innocuous.
@johnbiggs I wonder what the relationship between the more addicting nature of Twitter conversations and their (ostensibly) less innocuous...itity?...is.
@jonathonbarton I think Twitter became performative - performative rage, humor, sexiness, etc. - while this is very much what Twitter once was - smart and sometimes boring chats and status updates.
@johnbiggs I could see that, yeah. With a small side dish of "isn't all social media performative at some level?" if only in the sense that the most boring post could be "bait in the water" for making connections with new, unknown people... (kind of exactly like this. :D )
@jonathonbarton the performative aspects of Twitter got far worse as more people came on and the dopamine hit of a viral post became widely known. I’m sure we’ll find ourselves in the same position here one day but maybe the real social media is the friends we made long the way!

@jonathonbarton @johnbiggs

I think an online space can set up an ethos where

1) Substance over spectacle is promoted

2) An expectation of good faith is required

3) Evidence is asked for and evaluating that evidence honestly is the norm

4) People are generally respectful

Reddit in the early days was pretty good too. Before user created subreddits, before pics were included.

The larger a community gets the harder it is to maintain that kind of ethos

@jonathonbarton @johnbiggs

There is a lot to be said about the topic generally. This is just a slice but perhaps interesting....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

"Eternal September or the September that never ended[1] is Usenet slang for a period beginning around 1993[2] when Internet service providers[2] began offering Usenet access to many new users. The flood of new users overwhelmed the existing culture for online forums and the ability to enforce existing norms."

@johnbiggs @jonathonbarton You’re probably right for the most part
