I think an online space can set up an ethos where
1) Substance over spectacle is promoted
2) An expectation of good faith is required
3) Evidence is asked for and evaluating that evidence honestly is the norm
4) People are generally respectful
Reddit in the early days was pretty good too. Before user created subreddits, before pics were included.
The larger a community gets the harder it is to maintain that kind of ethos
