The surge started at 5pm PST, the same time that Musk’s hardcore deadline ended and many twitter employees quit.

Yesterdays's *daily* migration to Mastodon was a record.
The picture doesn't capture fully what happened in the 24 hour period after Musk's 'hardcore' deadline. In that particular 24hour period there were 240 thousand registrations!
A few weeks ago, back in October and prior to Musk being in charge of Twitter, there were only a few thousand daily registrations to Mastodon.

Daily migration to Mastodon is still high, and another daily record today!
The hourly migration rate has now slowed though from the peak of yesterday, but hourly registrations are still double what it used to be last week.
Daily migration to Mastodon, although slowed from the surge on 18th and 19th November, is still double what it used to be at start of the November.
Now two thousand registrations per hour, compared to one thousand at start of November.
For comparison back in October there used to be only about 50 registrations per hour.

I know it hasn't been without hiccups and frustration, but I am so impressed with mastodon's engineering that it has handled this much load with so little warning. Truly amazing.
