@mattlech it's good. both on ideological grounds (open source tech is the closest we have to collective ownership at the moment) and it's a good tool once you understand the federation aspect of it.

@mattlech very familiar -- stallman and free software was part of early political development for me :)

"open source" won the branding battle but mastodon is something that falls under that category of "free software". I used the former since more people understand it. it's license is inherent to making sure any derivatives and all inatances also follow it. that only gets you so far of course, which is where the more thoughtfulness the dev team has made with its design decisions come in
