Tbf this safely beats discord
@mattlech Just different purposes.
@dave yeah I mean as a Twitter replacement
@dave @mattlech How do we change background pics?

@mattlech @sleslie @dave Download a 3rd party app. They don’t update the Mastodon app very often, it’s way behind on features.

I highly recommend Metatext on iOS, if you’re coming from twitter. You can also change your banner photo on desktop!

@sleslie @dave @mattlech heads-up: the desktop site also just added an edit button and following hashtags a couple days ago, which should start rolling out in 3rd party apps before too long!
@mattlech it's good. both on ideological grounds (open source tech is the closest we have to collective ownership at the moment) and it's a good tool once you understand the federation aspect of it.
@colinmahns curious if you're familiar with this critique re open source vs free software. Admittedly the decentralization stuff does leave me a little cold but open to it

The Meme Hustler

While the brightest minds of Silicon Valley are “disrupting” whatever industry is too crippled to fend off their advances, something odd is happening to our language. Old, trusted words no longer mean…

@mattlech very familiar -- stallman and free software was part of early political development for me :)

"open source" won the branding battle but mastodon is something that falls under that category of "free software". I used the former since more people understand it. it's license is inherent to making sure any derivatives and all inatances also follow it. that only gets you so far of course, which is where the more thoughtfulness the dev team has made with its design decisions come in

@mattlech I feel like discord serves a completely different purpose than twitter
@mattlech There's going to be a learning curve for sure for this app.
@mattlech Discord is more of a chatroom, anyone who tries to turn it into a twitter replacement is going to have a bad time, and I feel this is going to happen with more services. Even Mastodon feels more like an old Facebook feed (before it was was overwhelmed with suggested video posts and ads) than the much faster and more flighty / causal nature of Twitter.
@mattlech Majority Report heading to Mastodon too?
