I prefer looking at the local and federated time lines. Local shows just what people in your instance are posting. Federated shows anyone people in your instance follow

So, first, you find the server you like, and get an account. Once you do that, you'll need to find federated friends. You can do that by putting names in the search field, shunting it off through the ODN conduits, rerouting through the framistat generators, making sure to use the interplexing compensator to adjust for vraibles in the data stream.
