It's basically the last days of The Matrix Online over there. Real end of an era vibes.
@will between this and the crypto detonation and the release of that skull meltingly terrible Smashing Pumpkins album, this is a great day for schadenfreude
@will Really sucks. If you used twitter 'right' (3rd party apps/no ads/no algorithm) such a great resource for breaking news, keeping up with folks whose opinions you respect and connecting w/ folks. Hope this place, or another, can step up.
@will It might be a little embarrassing if this isn't the literal end, but even in the best case scenario this is going to crater ad spend and push it further underwater.
@mrencyclopedia The only way it comes back from this is if he walks away and whoever the next schmucks who own it are start hiring people back. I don't think it has the earnings potential to warrant that.

@will Maybe Musk will lose control of it in the inevitable bankruptcy and it will live on in name only like the undead trademark of Toys R Us.

Some new service will get built from the remains and call itself Twitter, but it will live on the same way MySpace and LiveJournal lives on, technically still around but almost entirely abandoned.

@will It's funny my feed is just getting quieter.
@will yeah but the end of the Matrix Online beta where a bunch of eyeballs suddenly appeared in the sky and crumpled everyone's avatar like an aluminum can

@will it’s insanely ironic that the entire platform is either people making fun of Elmo or bot accounts spamming complete BS at his mentions.

He cried for months about the % of bots on the platform, but I’d wager it’s worse now.

@jakecarpenter In retrospect, firing all the people who worked to keep bots off the site probably had an impact
@will I feel like a bunch of costumed avatars should be trying to jump up on a roof to dance and wave goodbye, like the end of a charity MMO stream.
