In Mastodon-speak, what does "Favourite" mean? I want to "Like" things, but those things are not my "Favourites" (imho, "Favourites" are very rare). Am I doing this wrong?
@d0n A favourite is a heart/like, and a bookmark is storing something without faving.
@d0n Yeah... I guess all it does is notify the author that you liked it. Oh, and you can find a list of the posts that you Favourited. I'm with you, my first instinct based on the label was to use it sparingly but not any more! ⭐, ⭐, ⭐, ⭐ ...
@cjordahl Language and expectations are hard! Thanks!
@d0n @cjordahl With some of the decisions around search, I've found that fave & bookmark features are good for keeping track of posts that might need to be recalled/referenced in the future. Otherwise they might fly away into the ether, unless they have memorable and searchable hashtags.
@d0n The star tells the poster (only) you appreciate the toot. Boosting tells others it’s worth reading.
@Ingurido @d0n Thankyou .. I think I’d seen hat somewhere .. now definitive.
@Ingurido @d0n that "only" bit isn't 100% accurate though. Others can see who favorited a toot, within limits. So it's a *publicly visible* statement of appreciation.
For example when Don tested oEmbed improvements for Flickr the other day, I can see that Ben Ramsey favorited it because I'm on the same masto instance he is. Being on the same instance as Don, you'll probably see a different set of results at this link: https://phpc.social/@[email protected]/109355731391806061/favourites

@d0n I'm not sure, maybe boost posts that are real favourites?
@d0n a favorite is a like. A boost is a re-tweet.
@photodavid78 @d0n and a bookmark for those things you want to save for reference. Boosts are the only thing that affect network visibility but Favourites do give the poster an indication of how many people liked their post. I don't think bookmarks are visible to anyone but you.
@d0n different concept to favouriting in flickr. It's more like 'like' on twitter or facebook. Like saying "yeah that's cool" or "I agree with this" etc. Retweet might be closer to favourite though it's also saying you think this post deserves to be broadcast wider. Bookmark in mastodon is like favourite in flickr
@d0n Favourite is a non-algorithmic Like. It notifies the OP that you like their thing, and absolutely nothing more :)
@d0n
As I see (and use) it, favourites are a way to appreciate a post without necessarily "liking" it (it could be interesting, important, ecc.).
@d0n I see it as an "appreciate" button, like "Thanks" for the post.
