Kirby Conrodhaving a hard time staying off twitter because it still has a more active timeline than on here, and also bc i'm still kind of... not used to the social norms here. also because like, it still feels a little small/claustrophobic over here, just in terms of relative numbers? idk how to really mitigate this
(as an example of social norms i'm still figuring out - on twitter i use the "like" button as a sort of "i saw this / am engaging with it" button, but that seems to be WAY less of a thing here - a ton of toots I see have zero stars / I'm the only person liking it, which makes me feel weird and self-conscious about it? idk)
ALSO LIKE. idk how to put this without sounding like i'm full of myself, but on twitter my tweets do numbers kind of no matter what they are, and I do really get a lot out of the "engagement = little dopamine hits" mechanic, and that mechanic just does not exist here and I feel like even mentioning this is gauche augh
gCat@kirby There is no Algorithm, and likes/stars are not tracked by anything. So people don´t click that even if they read and like. You will get real engagement I guess only via replies. And boosting is what will make toots cross into other worlds. I dunno. I get if you were used to twitter it might seem unsatisfying here, but people are still figuring things out and have not found their own mastodon style yet. So conversations and replies are not yet flowing in an unselfconscious way. Also some of those needs and hits fed by twitter likes is an inextricable part of the package that makes twitter the toxic place that it can often be. I am glad to be trying to learn to do without it! Right now my feed feels really interesting and fresh, so I´m feeling good about it.
Joshua McNeill@kirby Favoriting something here doesn't cause it to be shown to people who follow you like it does on Twitter, so it's mainly used just to bookmark things here. On the other hand, for the same reasons, boosting (ie retweeting) is much more common here
@joshisanonymous I've noticed that - and quote retweeting doesn't exist here (as far as I'm aware) which I'm still adjusting to as well
@kirby Yeah, no quote tweeting (which I'm personally very happy about). Another thing that's different for increasing the activity in your TL before you follow a lot of people is to follow hashtags. Search a hashtag and if your server is 4.0+ you'll see an add button on the top right. (Only searchable text is hashtags, also, so they're used a LOT more here than Twitter)
Danica Sutherland@kirby Very much same feeling here — it makes everything seem like people are just talking to themselves (maybe that’s mostly true), but also a “popular” post here seems to have lots of “reblogs” and still only one or two hearts.
Andrea@kirby I think the counts you see (of likes/favourites/boosts, for example) on other users' posts are only the counts on that post *from your server*, so if you are on a server with one or few people, the counts will always seem low.

irne jawe@kirby this might be due to the way things propagate across servers? idk much about it but many times you will see more engagement when you click through to the original post
