I'm seeing some "selling" toots popping up here. This could be the thin edge of the wedge. Lets keep this place social. We all have something to sell/promote - probably be best to keep those posts to the other social spaces. Just a thought.
@johnmee Block and report/flag?
@clickhere Yeah, but it would be nice if people adhered to the culture.
@johnmee Oh, completely. Perhaps an interim approach is to not be able to monetise/shill here (block, etc.).
@clickhere Agreed. I dabbled in the NFT market once and within a week, my timeline was full of people shilling/self promoting. My previous contacts on the space were completely missing from my timeline and the NFT retweets had started to invade their timelines too. With the amount of RT'ing that community engage in, it took me weeks to extricate myself from it.
@johnmee Oh god. Yeah, all I can say is don't put your money into scams and pyramid schemes. 😬

@johnmee I've just posted a question on this as I genuinely don't know what the consensus is.

Completely understand that people don't want ads on here.

But what about artists including links to their websites (which may have work for sale), or promoting stuff which supports a charity / non profit?

@onlyindevon I'm ok with them including a website in their bio (I have) or pinned post but don't really like the idea of promoting individual products/services on the timeline. As I said, it could be the thin end of the wedge. Before we know it, the place could have adverts or self promotions every few toots. Only my opinion though.

@johnmee

What about if its behind a CW?

I know what you're saying but for non profits it potentially impacts on the viability of moving from "Big Social" it it means they are not able to use the Fediverse to promote what is possibly their only income stream.

@johnmee @onlyindevon

What about a photographer who shares loads of photos and occasional tips on their blog but once in a while has a workshop they'd like to invite folks to join in?

#AskingForAFriend

@ewen @onlyindevon I suppose it's all about balance. You'll see users on the other spaces that use it totally as an advertising medium.
I keep a blog too - I haven't tooted about it yet. But if I were to, I'd be happy enough to keep it to 1 toot per week.
@onlyindevon @johnmee @ewen I’d hate to see this turn into the NFT hell that twitter has become but at the same time I’d like to post links to work or blog posts from time to time, same as I’d like to see the same from others. It’s about balance, I think.

@kimaldis @onlyindevon @johnmee

Balance is good.

I think there are people who want to share and care, before worrying so much about pushing a product. Scale is the key too. Individuals vs corporations.

@ewen @kimaldis @onlyindevon Agreed. It would be nice to have some guidance form long term mastodon users about this.
@onlyindevon @johnmee @kimaldis @ewen *butts in politely* I’d be happy to see artists mentioning that they have a new zine or book out and perhaps I’d like to buy it. I’ve got some really lovely zines that way. Constantly pushing? No, thanks. NFTs ? Get in the sea.
@kimaldis @onlyindevon @ewen My exact thoughts too.
I got caught up in the NFT shitshow for a while. It took over my timeline in a week and started encroaching onto my contacts timelines too. It took me weeks to get out of it and clean up my timeline.
@johnmee @onlyindevon @ewen commercial posts should have a commercial warning tag?
@onlyindevon @ewen @johnmee with an exempt for non profits?

@johnmee I don't have anything to sell but I don't mind if artists include a link where a work can be purchased.

This place is anti viral by nature, so the audience for a post will be smaller than on the bird site.

@johnmee - I’d got the impression that, as people generally won’t boost such items, they’d ‘naturally’ not get anywhere?
@laurekatrine I'd have thought that too but i saw one or two toots going thru selling art. I know it's not widespread but with so many coming from twitter, it could creep in. (For the record, I've come from the birdsite too)
@johnmee - I’ve, just in the last day or so, seen more people who perhaps haven’t adjusted to this being a fresh start. You’ve got to give to get on here and I find that refreshing. 😊
