FediTips has moved!

The latest Mastodon update lets you follow hashtags. When you follow, posts with a tag appear in your timeline automatically.

Try following #Gardening to make posts about gardening appear in your timeline.

This can be REALLY useful for discovering interesting accounts.

To follow a hashtag:
1. Log in through your server's website
2. Search for hashtag
3. Click it to see its results
4. Click on 👤+ icon in top right (click again to unfollow)

Posts from followed tags are visible in the apps too.

@feditips sadly, mobile apps seem to not support this feature yet. Posts from followed hashtags are shown, but there exists no button to follow/unfollow tags.

@feditips I love this, but I would like an indication in the timeline that reminds me that I follow a hashtag (and which one). Just a little icon would do.

@mattgriffin @feditips yes. A pop up list of followed-hashtags showing number of new posts next to each one, would be the logical next requirement to simulating a groups feature.

But where can you see, which hashtags you’re following? Only in the result panel? And is it possible to group followed hashtags in lists?

@sonofjon I was just looking for that too. Also wondering how it highlights that it's a hashtag follow in my home timeline.

Maybe I just need to play with this a bit more to spot it.

@mackaj @sonofjon @feditips You can see if it's a followed hashtag by searching for it again. The icon is different for followed/unfollowed. But I would love to know how to view all your followed hashtags. Haven't found that yet.

@feditips : that's super cool but also slightly confusing because 9 times out of 10, I go "who's this person ?! why am I suddenly seeing this ?" and then I remember it's not the person, it's the hashtag :P I wish there was a color or icon or mention or something reminding me.

@feditips it’s not clear to me how you manage hashtags you’re following. They’re not appearing in my list of follows and I’ve not found them by hunting through my preferences and settings. Only seems to be exposed on desktop. Perhaps my server hasn’t been updated yet? Not a clue.

@stokes @feditips you can set up a separate timeline with hashtags only.

Go to preferecences; then appearance. Click ”advanced views. Now when you seach for a hashtag, click the settings icon and then pin. The timeline will appear.

To add more tags, click the settings icon of that newly created timeline and click ”add more hashtags”.

@FrankenGraphics @feditips I guess now I'm using an app to interact with Mastodon much more than the web UI, my original point comes back into focus. If there was an option to follow a hashtag on its own timeline (like a list) instead of it being amalgamated into the main timeline, that would be perfect. Note – this is just wish list stuff!
