John Newmark@jw It looks like posts from remote users that someone on our instance follows gets saved too. But there’s a way to delete remote user cache after 7 days. So growth should slow down after a week. (If customizable I’d make it less than 7 days. I don’t see a reason to cache remote user posts.)
@jw The ability to follow hashtags which I hear is part of release 4.0 might also impact similarly once the update is installed.

@nix @jcnewmark I think it's just the media cache. It's at 40Gb today. As long as it "flushes", everything should be good. Also, with the 4 update, SUPPOSEDLY you don't even have to shut down, but it's just an update and nothing should be lost. SUPPOSEDLY. I will take a snapshot before.
Christy S@jw I'm definitely noticing more things on my federated timeline here than I expected for such a small instance. I'm still figuring out how all of this works, though. I'm guessing this instance is super new?

@downey Thanks! I had it on a 50gig LAMP and it crapped out on day 7. Hoping it was a "swap" thing and the 100gig holds. I might do the secondary storage when I upgrade, but I like simple. :)
@jw Note that there are some new settings in https://mastodon.example.com/admin/settings/content_retention that might help keep the size down (possibly at the expense of more frequent network traffic for more frequent caching).
@downey I have faith in this community. Old enough to know when to wait a little bit, tho. :)
