Counter-signaling is still signaling and done because it works. Yes, it's largely something only men are permitted, but in fairness, a lot of that is enforced by women through indirect aggression.

I possibly counter-signal harder than anyone in tech- but it's rarely recognized as such and even the most overt, in-person displays of competence aren't enough to overcome the negative impact and yield the net positive results counter-signaling typically offers men in tech.
