@dapperhistorian

Small Beer is not as safe as this chart might suggest. Poor Thomas Thetcher died of a violent fever by drinking a surfeit thereof.

@misterprickles It was unfiltered wasn't it? Probably ripe for a fair few diseases if kept or made unhygienically....
@dapperhistorian I've heard tell that "Europeans brewed it, but East Asians boiled it," hence our respective traditions for booze vs tea. But this may be post-hoc justification.
@dapperhistorian Great names here; toddy and crank, flip and shrub....

@dapperhistorian

So whisky, or gin or rum, in the morning is slightly less evil than during daytime or night…?

@dapperhistorian I love this chart! Where is this version of it from? The one I've seen was in an issue of the European Magazine but I can't tell if this one is from there or a different source.
@dapperhistorian Looking more carefully it definitely appears to be a larger format, also more nicely detailed in the thermometer (which makes sense given magazine budgets)

@h_d_hudson I'd never thought about printing budgets of the period that way, what a revelation!

I can't exactly remember which publication I found it in, but I'll take a dig and see if I can work it out.

@dapperhistorian I will have 2 toddys and crank and a flip and shrub please...
@Yvonne I'm pretty sure that kind of order wouldn't be out of place in a lot of modern cocktail bars...
@dapperhistorian and things change and things stay the same...
@dapperhistorian
“Hysteric water”?

@tkinias Oh...strap yourself in!

Hysteric/Hysteria/Hysterical water was a kind of drink made to 'calm women'.

When you look at the ingredients, I'm surprised people were only calmed and not just killed outright every time...
