I’ve heard it said that to reduce clutter in everyone’s home stream, The First post of a thread should be public and the rest should be unlisted, so only those that tap into the first toot will see it.

How do I do that within the Mastodon phone app?

@Territan not sure about the official Mastodon app but in Tusky there is a little globe by the attachment, emoji buttons
you press and can select unlisted.
@Territan as @lostapiarist said, step 1 download tusky or metatext, step 2 check the globe when you compose a toot
@host @Territan @lostapiarist I use Metatext, and when I tried to test this out, it seemed that the same privacy applied to every toot in the chain. Unless I missed an option, it seemed like the only way to do it is to make the first post separately from the rest of the thread.
@host @Territan @lostapiarist (please lmk if I just missed something obvious, because it would definitely help to have easy access to that bit of etiquette)

@bradd @Territan @lostapiarist I dont havr metatext nor even see what it looks like.

Maybe someone else here knows the answer

@host @Territan @lostapiarist I do know how to change privacy in a reply to an existing thread, but I do not know how to post a new thread where only the first toot is public and the rest are unlisted.

@bradd Are you trying to post the entire thread all at once?

Anyhow, perhaps Tusky has this feature. I wouldn't know because I post stuff toot by toot, and it's trivial then.

@oz Yeah, this is what I’m talking about. Metatext lets you post a thread with multiple toots, but the privacy setting applies to the whole thread. Can’t configure the first toot separately.
@bradd I see! No clue, though. Sorry!
@oz It looks like it's not directly supported. I don't post threads like that very often, but when I do it's nice to get it all out at once so that folks can read everything before jumping in with replies. I'm very slow at composing text!
@bradd Maybe you could post the thread unlisted and then post a public toot referring to it. I suppose that's no different from your proposed solution though.

@oz @bradd Maybe post the whole thread unlisted, then post the last toot that wraps it up as public.

Same as having the first toot public

@host @Territan @lostapiarist It looks like it's currently not supported. Thanks for helping to look into it!
