Managers can't really issue orders, right? Because there is no command-and-control. So what do they do? Whisper sweet dreams into ears and coerce for the rest?

I guess what I'm asking is, what is the platonic form of management leadership (NOT c-&-c and coercion)?

@hiredthought Ultimatums is how i perceive some of that top down authority
@byron_miller coercion! there must be something better. some say "intent" but I am unsure.
@hiredthought yeah i guess some operate on the dog biscuit kind of approach of rewarding in the direction they want to go

@hiredthought I don't know what I'd call it besides "good management".

If I didn't want to do what my manager told me, we'd have a conversation about it. I'd convince him, or he'd convince me, or we might ask the rest of the team.

Ditto if I was a manager and my direct didn't want to do what I asked them to do.

If you don't trust your direct's reasons for doing (or not) the things they do (or them vice versa), that's a deal breaker that needs to be resolved before anything else.
