It should be illegal to send commercial mail, even (or especially) to a known customer, without a one-click link to unsubscribe.

Some woman in London is getting her shoes delivered along with her festive lights. I should not know this.

@robpike I don’t think anybody is willing to give up that sweet sweet subscriber count that easily, sadly.

Regulators need to step in.

@robpike Here in Germany, it is actually already the case legally that the sender needs the recipient's consent. But still it is often ignored. Here, however, it is still possible to issue a formal complaint/legal warning if you want to make a point of it. At least as far as I know.
@robpike Afaik, it is here in Germany. There must be an easy opt-out link even for customers.
@robpike But, seeing as you do know - were they nice shoes? :)
@SaturniusMons That's the thing... I didn't get the shoes, just the mail, and I have no way from the mail to tell them.

@robpike Come live in Europe where it's already illegal under GDPR (https://gdpr.eu/email-encryption/#:~:text=What%20the%20GDPR%20does,it%20violating%20the%20GDPR.)

…or try to get such law adopted where you live 🤷

How does the GDPR affect email? - GDPR.eu

The GDPR requires organizations to protect personal data in all its forms. It also changes the rules of consent and strengthens people’s privacy rights. In this article, we’ll explain...

@tbroyer Well, the mail was from the UK to Australia. Which country needs the law, if we are to choose one? Oh yes, I seem to remember something about the UK and Europe but I can't quite pull it into focus.

@robpike Fwiw, GDPR is about EU citizens, wherever they live; a UK shop would assume (most of) its customers are British citizens, so the UK law would apply.
…and yes, no GDPR there for almost 2 years now (and that's without accounting for GDPR compliance which is also rather low/bad).

GDPR applies though if the shop explicitly targets EU citizens (e.g. allows paying in € and shipping in the EU)

@robpike I get so many emails for Alan, Allen, and Allan Pikes because of my early adopter firstname.lastname email address. I've only become email friends with one though.
