"What's our current heading?"
"Vexed question, sir. Best not to think about it, sir."

I've known about the Bottsand for ages - it's basically a floating German pooper-scooper for oil slicks - and I still can't work out if it's an act of genius or an office joke that went too far.

Anyway, once it's bored of mopping oil it folds back up to become a more conventional looking ship again.

People are mentioning RP FLIP, so just in case anyone wants to know what that's all about here's an image...

It's apparently considered pretty poor form to press the "rotate" button when the captain is using the heads.

@DreadShips are there any things still in use, in the military, that are mad, that weren't made in the 60s?

@diamondhell I mean, the British are still trying to make Ajax a thing. That's going to end up as a running military joke.

The Zubr hovercraft is an obvious candidate for your criteria though?

@DreadShips the 60s is when pretty much anything that can take top trumps in some way was built.

Whatever it was, it likely drank like Oliver Reed and was uncomfortable as hell, but went like a stabbed rat.

See Concorde, hovercrafts of all types, hydrofoils and many other things for further details

@diamondhell 1950s banged pretty hard as well, to be fair. I suspect some of the dafter modern stuff is classified or will only look silly in retrospect - it's possibly just too early to judge.

Airlander's flying bum was mooted for military use?

Could Airships Make A Comeback With New Hybrid Designs?

Airships. Slow, difficult to land, and highly flammable when they’re full of hydrogen. These days, they’re considered more of a historical curiosity rather than a useful method of trans…

@diamondhell @DreadShips I'm gonna throw Littoral Combat Ships and the F-35 into the mix, just in case. The Osprey also gets a nod, imo
@DreadShips Definitely one of the more interesting research vessels ever built. My wife went to Scripps Institute of Oceanography (Part of UC San Diego). She saw it, but never got on it. Darn!
@DreadShips Surely the naval architect could have imagined a far simpler and safer way to accomplish this?
@fergusoa I'm sure they could - but I'm glad they didn't
@DreadShips This reminds me of that research ship that turns into an off shore tower. Wish I could remember the name of it.

@DreadShips

"And what's yours?"
"Grigori, get me the flag that means 'just kindly fuck off', will you."

@DreadShips Do you think it's like a wishbone, and whoever gets the biggest part of the bridge when the boat splits decides?
@DreadShips vexed question is the name of my death metal band
