Who are the #MaryRenault fans out there and what can you tell me about her?
#writers #books #amreading
@r_mccormack I’ve got Fire From Heaven sitting on a pile waiting to be read. Friends on FB were saying how good her writing is. I’m still to dive in though.
@alsatch that’s the one I’ve got and am about to start
@r_mccormack Fab! A friend who taught English in Dunoon loved it. I’m currently on an Iain M Banks and am trying to drag it out so it doesn’t end too quickly. May give that a shot afterwards. Hope you enjoy it!
@r_mccormack I'm a Mary Renault fan, what did you want to know?
@amygriswold is Fire From Heaven a good place to start?
@r_mccormack Yes, that's the start of her Alexander trilogy, and a good starting place; I like Fire From Heaven, adore The Persian Boy, and am not a particular fan of Funeral Games, which I find depressing. I also unreservedly recommend The Last of the Wine and The Mask of Apollo, which may be my own personal favorite (the narrator, Nikeratos, is entertainingly practical after some of Renault's Very Serious Heroes.)
@r_mccormack I'm not a fan of The King Must Die or The Bull from the Sea; I think she was on stronger ground with history than with mythology. The Praise Singer is fun, but the plot rambles quite a bit. And The Charioteer is her WWII novel, which is worth reading if you have a fair amount of tolerance for gay angst.
@amygriswold thank you! The Alexander Trilogy sounds like the thing
@r_mccormack I haven’t read enough to call myself a fan, but I loved The Persian Boy.
@r_mccormack at one point I blazed through a whole pile. I think I started with The King Must Die.
