As the cool kids finally start rolling up, the aspects of social media I liked the least – the promotional aspects – start emerging. “Hi I’m __. I’ve done __ and I do __ and I sell __.”
@litherland they meet my good friend, “mute from public feeds” 🥰
@litherland I mean, ideally folks would tag their “promotional” toots as such. That way I could filter out just the stuff I don’t really want to see and could see any other “human connection” content available. But that’s not usually how these things work. Sooo 🤫.
@sajatype @litherland That's quite agood idea, I'll try to tag all my promotional toots

@triple @litherland 👍 I do think, though, that there is a difference between celebrating a release (which one does with friends), and trying to promote a release (which is targeting others).

It might be a fine line, but I think there is a separation.

@sajatype @triple Totally agree. My post/toot was probably a little harsh; I was mainly indulging in a little eye-rolling at the flood of hashtag introductions I’m suddenly seeing, as the celebs start rolling in when they realize they’ve been left behind on birdsite :)

@litherland @triple oh, nah. Your toot was right in line with some of the nonsense I've started to see posted to the local timeline by folks who think that this is the same as birdsite.

One today posted a *ton* of images with no text / caption advertising a type release. Immediate mute. I'm not here for that friend.

Others who used to be more promotional on bird I'm keeping an eye on to see if they adapt or will need a muting.

(and for anyone else who can see this, use hashtags!)

@sajatype @litherland As said by Aaron, I don't think your message was harsh. New place, new habits. Also, if tweeter might have had some marketing/sale benefits, we (I) have no idea if Mastodon has, so there might not even be any point in being too promotional here.
@triple @sajatype I think it runs counter to the spirit of this place. People are just so conditioned by capitalism and algorithms to always be selling, always be selling.
@litherland @sajatype Indeed we are conditioned. But also to a lot of people social medias became their (main) marketing channels. It's hard to re-wire into other patterns.
@triple @litherland @sajatype I think that’s an important discussion to have at the start of this. I totaly get everyone’s point and if I may share my opinion I’d say that we are not all on here because we love open source communities. I feel like a lot of us new on here were presented Mastodon as an alternative to the blue bird of shame. I totaly accept any community code that comes with such a change but we have to be patient with each other!
@litherland @triple @sajatype Creators work intensely on their letterforms, typefaces, for months, years. The majority hope to live on it, just for the happiness of being able to create even more. Refusing to share new things like older things, sometimes forgotten, is to make frustration and it limits exchanges about what makes us all vibrate.

@litherland @triple @sajatype This sharing pushes us to surpass ourselves, to question ourselves, to learn, to try to understand forms created by others.

Here, there are no global companies that promote what they call open source fonts that most often are only small pieces of the puzzle that allows them to enter even more into our privacy in order to send us their gigabit ads to earn more money.

@triple @sajatype @jfporchez Yeah no, I understand! I wasn’t talking about type folks, tbh. I mean I myself participate in promoting typefaces, foundries, etc., after all :) Was talking about blue-check folks who suddenly find themselves here and are very concerned that everyone knows they were verified on birdsite, sometimes going so far as to put blue-check emoji (which are meaningless in this context) next to their names.
@triple @sajatype @jfporchez (I follow a lot of journalists and academics 😉)
@litherland @sajatype @triple note that journalists promote everyday their work. Super useful to understand this world. But there is people who dislike news too. We’re multiple.
@sajatype @jfporchez @triple I love news, I love journalists, I love thinking and reading about politics – just not a huge fan of braggadocio, that’s all 😊

@jfporchez @triple @litherland Note that no one in this thread has said, “don’t talk about your fonts!” In fact, I specifically said to celebrate hard work! That is what community is all about.

For myself there is a difference though between celebration and constant self-promotion. That is why I suggest use of a hashtag for posts that one may deem more on the promotion side. That way folks like me can filter them out.

Up to you of course.
