No viable path left to 1.5C.

From today’s White House briefing: “Under President Biden, oil and natural gas production has increased, and we are on track to hit the highest production in our country’s history next year.”

Utterly tragic for the Earth and our future. Words fail.

@ClimateHuman Republicans are still gonna rant and rave about how Biden is making gas prices higher or some other BS, so who is this appealing to?
@ClimateHuman who the hell is advising the President? Do they understand why the 1.5°C limit is important?

@stuvx @ClimateHuman I think the tricky problem is that if Dems lose the political power, they can't do anything (actually it will go the other way under Rep control). And inflation is currently one of the most important thing in voters' mind.

I don't think Biden admin is stupid. They just can't do much regarding gas prices at the current situation with the election right in front of them.

@bettertowns could they provide income support? Could they nationalise gas companies? Could they increase financial incentives for EVs and electric bikes? Could they invest in public transport and renewables? Could they do like Canada’s carbon tax and give rebates for individuals?

Inflation is being driven in large part by crop failures around the world, and corporate profiteering - increasing gas supply isn’t going to help.

@stuvx I totally hear you! Most dems politicians want to do many of the items in the list. The issue is that making anything happen requires a lot of political capital. If dems says "we'll nationalize gas companies" then most media will cover 24/7 how crazy dems are and then they will lose all political power and gas companies will thrive even more. The politicians can usually move only slightly ahead of the crowd.
@stuvx It's a delicate game of trying to make many things happen while trying not to lose the power to make things happen.
@stuvx I think this is why grassroot organizations, local elections, and organized local movements are so important. If we can't build the majority bottom-up, it is simply not possible for anyone staying in the power while doing strong climate actions.

@bettertowns @stuvx absolutely
Politicians and the media respond to norms and especially anyone seen as a middle of the road. Really critical we don't lose what traction there is of taking (some) climate action / awareness as standard*

*in the UK now, most people would state that they try and do some things for the climate. Now often that is poor or little linked, such as recycling, but it is the desire that matters.

@rosehedges @bettertowns @stuvx
I desire a liveable planet. Will I get one?
@bree @rosehedges @stuvx it will depend on how many minds we can change in the near future. :)
@bettertowns I think a big problem is the media landscape. If the Dems were better communicators about why these things will lower costs that would help. They also need to return to their roots, Pelosi refusing to regulate how politicians can buy and sell shares in a market that they influence and have inherent conflict of interest is an example of how the political class has lost touch with everyday people.
@stuvx @bettertowns
All of your suggestions are possible if we can get a majority in congess.
@ClimateHuman Production of oil and natural gas increased during Biden administration Seems only logical. He became president during the Corona pandemic, when we had lock downs and didn't need to drive to work.
@ClimateHuman And it's not as though climate damage is being offset by economic benefits. Jobs and population are plunging in America's prolific Marcellus and Utica plays in Appalachia, not despite of the gas boom, but because of it. https://ohiorivervalleyinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Misplaced-Faith-FINAL-1-1-3.pdf
@ClimateHuman It seems the collective of rich individuals, large corporations, and global north governments, have decided it's better to be rich and deal with the effects of climate change than to pay to prevent it. Tragedy.
@ClimateHuman Peter, I appreciate your fight and maybe you're not the right person I should ask this to, but do not see how we can reduce oil&gas output without reducing demand at the same time... also I also get that if prices fall because demand goes away it will discourage some of the transitions. But if prices get too high they just cripple some folks that have no means to adjust and fill the pockets of "unfriendly" profiteers.
@ClimateHuman my lawyer advises me to not comment on possible future paths.
@ClimateHuman 1. politics and 2. leaving fossil fuels in the ground appear fundamentally incompatible in the United States right now.
@ClimateHuman Severely depressing but not surprising.
@ClimateHuman Address this to the republican senate who killed the build back bill. Biden is not king. We're trying, vote tomorrow if you havent already.

@ClimateHuman Hi Peter,
I was a**ested for remaining sitting [with 6 others] on Beltway Oct 10. I live in Chapel Hill, I am 68. I helped out with the July 4th Beltway and other actions. There were 4 NC-ians a***ested on 7/4; there are now 5 of us NC-ians in D.E. busted [besides you, heh] who live in the Triangle and could do some kind of activity here. You may want to choose to stick with scientists (but Duke U is pretty corporate!) & we have fought a coal plant ON UNC CAMPUS!! plus horrible monopoly 'Dook" energy, it's tough here!! But we BEAT their A.C. p*peline!)
We (7) have court in a few weeks. (date now to change, was to be 11/28)
We (7) have a zoom session with the lawyer tonight at 6:30.

But my ask of you to call our lawyer and/or the Declare Emergency org'ers below; they are in the process of using NECESSITY defense :) for their prior (April) sit, they just had a pre-trial thing this past week about it! (good development!)

Maybe you, or M. Mann (he has done that) or other(s) could prep an appearance at their (12/12) trial, or ours, in case the court would allow it.

I am nervous about mean, yucky, freezing crap-food jail, but as we all say there are ppl really suffering and dying from CC so this is nothing.
I so love all your tweets, cry with you when I see your pinned bank video.

luv,
