I am trying to relearn the saxophone after decades of not playing it. It is not quite like a bicycle, where you never forget. But... also, I remember way more than I expected.
@mmasnick I was a sax music performance major MANY decades ago. I put it down for 15 years or more, and when I picked it up again, I was totally amazed at what my fingers remembered to do!
@mmasnick
Cool - how is your embouchure ? That is what kills my attempts at getting back into clarinet.
@mpm that's the main part i need to relearn... readjust too. But it was better than I expected. But... the high notes still... need work.
@mpm @mmasnick I picked up one after a 20 year break. took about a month of playing 15 min a day to get everything working comfortably again. Fun! Get some music you like to play and light up those old brain pathways again!

@mmasnick

same same but the piano.
Fortunately for others within hear shot, I am relearning on an electric keyboard with earphones so nobody else has to suffer through my practice sessions. 🀣

@wren there's an electronic saxophone that came out last year that I am so so very tempted to purchase for this very reason. But... I don't think it'll be useful for getting my embouchure back and that's the most important part

@mmasnick

Carry on and IF anyone complains, let them know at least your not starting from scratch. They’ll immediately be grateful. 😁

@wren see, i'm assuming my neighbors will assume it's my son (who's been playing for a few years and was terrible, but is now quite good), so I have a cover story for a bit. πŸ˜‚
@mmasnick @wren Another tip. If you are playing a 7 mouthpiece, get a 4. And some softer reads while you build things back up.
@mmasnick Post videos!
@mmasnick (at least, if you're comfortable with posting. Always nice to see folks being musicalπŸ™‚ )
@Pwnallthethings trust me. at this stage, no one wants that...
@mmasnick I started learning earlier this year, but already had experience with clarinet so I've picked it up pretty well
@mmasnick I also played sax. I got it out a couple times during lockdown just to make noises for the kid. It was funny to me that I could still play the first few bars of my schools fight song.
@vmstan my son used mine for the past 3 years, and has now moved on from alto to tenor, so gave me back my old alto.
@mmasnick yeah mine is also an alto. I wish I still had the bari I used for jazz band. That was fun.
@vmstan @mmasnick another former bari player checking in... Would love to pick one up and start playing some day!
@fooeynet @vmstan if you're a bari fan, you should check out Leo P and his band Too Many Zooz. They're amazing, and he has taken the bari to new heights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMyqasy2Lco

@mmasnick @vmstan oooooohhhhh yeah -- the first time I heard "car alarm" I had to send to all my high school band friends ... Amazing
@mmasnick My advice is to do long tones to rebuild stamina. It's exhausting to pick it up again; I tried after a 13 year break...
@yellenesque oh yeah. i'm spending a lot of time doing long tones to try to bring the feeling back.
@mmasnick Now you can join a post-black metal band. Saxophone is all the rage these days in that genre.
@mmasnick I can confirm that after a couple of decades, you *can* in fact forget how to ride a bike πŸ˜…
@mmasnick I played violin from ages 4 to 13. When I think about music, I still think in violin fingerings. Yet when I picked up the violin 10 years after quitting, I couldn’t even keep the bow on the strings.
@mmasnick i miss playing. Someday I'll buy me a 🎷!
@mmasnick Drink. Not fall down drunk but in that nice fuzzy space. I say down and played the piano after years of not playing and I was shocked. I actually played better (I had a sober witness)!
@mmasnick I've been working on Shofar. Musically speaking it's a high pitched bugle
@bramcohen very familiar with the shofar and used to own one... (a small one, not one of those fancy curly ones!)
@mmasnick I had a similar experience a few months ago when I picked up a clarinet for the first time in 25 years.
@mmasnick
I played my trombone for the first time in 20 years when I briefly joined a ska band last year. It was surprising how much I remembered; muscle memory and whatnot. #LosOcupados
@mmasnick still have the fingerings memorized decades later, but I'll bet my embouchure is a nightmare
@mmasnick I had a neighbor in Brisbane who pick up bag piping again. He forgot *a* *lot*
