My face whilst trying to figure out Mastadon.

Tried to upload a photo but that doesn’t seem to work either. Great.

This place makes me feel like an old man that yells at clouds and I’m not technologically inept in the slightest.

@Supertanskiii Most probably the server where you're registered that can't handle the recent wave of new users. You can always try to move to a new one or wait for your admin to upgrade the current one
@remz it amazes me that they expect lay people to even understand the server madness tbh. It’s needlessly complicated

@remz @Supertanskiii it’s not *needlessly* complicated, it’s decentralised.

The analogy is thrown around a lot but it’s really not much different to how emails work; you have a name at a server/host and people who follow you and people you follow *may* be on different servers.

Is it harder to find people? Yes: it doesn’t have the ability to suggest people to you like Twitter does. But once you follow someone, you’ll see their “toots” in your feed.

@Supertanskiii @remz CHILL! You’ve been here for five minutes and brought more negative energy to this place in three posts than I‘ve been experiencing in the past two weeks. Ask, listen, search and soon you will know your way around here. Like we all did.
@Supertanskiii @remz it's actually not. Mastodon is a community hall rather than the town square These are Cooperative Communities building aka Fediverse where you control your data. Birdland is a corporate business that sells your data.
@Supertanskiii @remz Your server is your basecamp. From there you can sally forth pretty much anywhere you want. Just remember to #hashtag the shit out of everything - and maybe spend more than a few minutes reading the room. The place is largely run by volunteers, not a overgrown #ManChild #SpaceKaren who is richer than Croesus.
