"As with any social medium, Mastodon is only as good as the people that choose to use it and what they choose to say on there. In all likelihood, Mastodon won't be a like-for-like replacement for anything that has gone before. It will be its own thing."

Mastodon FAQ: Toot sweet?

Mastodon: the next big thing in social media? Here, I attempt to answer some frequently asked questions for new Mastodon users or the Mastodon-curious.

@MJCarty as long as it’s nothing like YouTube comments , or Twitter. Been there , done that 😦
@MJCarty thank goodness for it’s own thing. Intentional community is a good thing. I think about all the folks that were on Mastodon before the Twitter migration, before Twitter folks were trying to make Mastodon like Twitter, I wonder if the structure of Mastodon itself has kept the migration from negatively impacting their experience? (Other than slow site at times). #virturalrefugees . I wonder how many will stay if the bird gets itself together?

@KarenMonroy Interesting questions all!

It would be particularly interesting to hear the perspective of long-established Mastodon users on whether it has changed much or at all these past few weeks. If it has, I hope not for the worse!

@MJCarty @KarenMonroy It has changed because there are many more people now, which is generally a good thing. Comments are kinder, seems more grown up than the bird.

@MJCarty @davidallengreen — to be fair, the ‘only as good as how you use it’ thing also applies to Twitter; when I’ve been reading posts about how toxic so many people’s experience of Twitter was/is I have indeed been wondering what sorts of people folks have been following to get such a toxic experience, since I followed only nice people and my experience was according to that.

@simon My experience of Twitter has been very nearly uniformly positive, too.

But it would seem that such an experience is not that common, and I have no doubt that it either is or has become a "hellscape" for many users.

@MJCarty but it doesn't make much sense, it will get boring soon
@MJCarty that’s okay. I’m ready for something nicer, more thoughtful maybe. Hoping 🙏
