@adamdavidson I think what's confusing is that dodging a bullet (or in this case many bullets) is a source of relief and an encouraging sign but any sense of hope can only be short lived because the ongoing “bullets” of the larger anti-democratic movement will keep coming.

In short, the incentive structure on the right—with or without Trumpism—will continue to encourage a range of anti-democratic efforts for years (decades?) to come and eventually some "bullets" won't be dodged.

@owasow @adamdavidson The Republican agenda is a tough sell, so they're reliant on the least democratic elements of the American system (the Senate, the Electoral College) to maintain their power. They would rather give up democracy than tax cuts for rich people.
@owasow @adamdavidson Aw shit that's depressing take. However nothings going to spoil my happy mood today :)
@Democracylover @adamdavidson I agree it's a grim prognosis in the short run but consistent with the longer history of anti-democratic politics in America (e.g., segregation). I also take heart that we defeated Jim Crow once and, with time, can defeat the ethno-nationalist faction again.
@owasow @Democracylover @adamdavidson
Until we get rid of the electoral college and uneven senate apportionment we are not really living in a democracy.
So we will ride this knife edge.
Probably until the end of the nation.

@adamdavidson @owasow Yes. This — that we can’t keep dodging bullets indefinitely — is the reason we need focus on structural reform.

We at MAD are doing grassroots work around media reform, esp media ownership and business pressure on journalists. We want every local activist group across America to work on media issues as well as their other issues. Because media is one of the biggest structural issues.

@owasow @adamdavidson well said. Thank you. I feel like we Americans are encouraged to view the political process as more spectator than participants, so we sleep until roused with impending danger, then seem to go back to sleep after confronting the worst & most obvious dangers, leaving the rest to rise up later. It feels like that, anyway.

@owasow @adamdavidson To paraphrase the IRA after they tried and failed to blow up Margaret Thatcher at Brighton: democracy was lucky today. But democracy has to be lucky every time. They only have to be lucky once.
