#onthisday in 1941, 42 #royaltankregiment of the #britisharmy received six Matilda II tanks, bringing the two squadrons that were available for the first stage of Operation Crusader up to 15 tanks each. The third squadron, C, despite often being counted as being present at the start of the operation, did not join until days later. #ww2 #histodons @histodons #desertwar #eightharmy #afrikakorps #rommel
The first operation of 1 Army Tank Brigade, equipped with infantry tanks, of which 42 RTR formed part, was to provide armoured support to 7 Indian Brigade's assault on the Omars, the western-most part of the Axis border fortifications on Libyan-Egyptian border. The two regiments assigned this task, 42 and 44 RTR, suffered heavy losses in this operation. #tankbattles #armouredwarfare https://crusaderproject.wordpress.com/2012/11/23/more-late-arrivals/

The disabled but repairable tanks were brought to the Brigade workshop at Bir Sherferzen, where a few days later they ended up in the path of Rommel's 'Dash for the wire'. 15. Panzerdivision attacked the workshop, believing itself under attack by the disabled tanks. The workshop fitters and some tank crew on site manned the disabled tanks and tried to fight off the attacking German force, to no avail. https://crusaderproject.wordpress.com/2011/09/19/the-battle-for-1-army-tank-brigades-repair-shop/
