This fortnight's column is a sad farewell to the bonus psychology subsidies that meant we could do actual therapy and not just "how have you been?"s https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/commentisfree/2022/nov/12/our-mental-health-care-system-is-not-fit-for-purpose-i-should-know
Our mental health care system is not fit for purpose – I should know

Extra resources poured into the system during Covid gave us a tantalising glimpse of what could be – but it’s still too little, and it’s ending too soon

@annaspargoryan it’s also a pity that registered counsellors are not recognised by the govt as mental health professionals so can’t offer mental health plans.. could be utilised to take the pressure off the systems
@annaspargoryan Great column. I had a lot of therapy back in the 90s when their was no financial support. It was very hard for me & clearly impossible for many others. I still see a psychologist from time to time & even with the rebate it’s not cheap. Why is health, mental, dental & general physical, only important when people are wealthy?
@annaspargoryan I hear you. The 20 sessions were great. My psychologist of many years retired in March… she got me thru the last few years & helped me as much as possible to find someone new but her recommendations had closed books. I keep looking got help by chance thru Community Collective (in Vic) - a free program with supervised 4th or 5th yr psychology students… She has been been great and has referred me to a clinical psychologist colleague for a mental health care plan.
