The official app is limited. Once you’ve gotten comfy on here I suggest you ditch it.

Toot! is a paid app and worth it. Filled with delightful touches and a glorious UX.

Metatext is a free open source app that has a lot of features but no frills.

Tooot, yeah three o’s, is a minimalist app better than the official app.

Mammoth is currently in TestFlight beta from the dev that looks super-promising but lacks key features at this point but it’s 1 to watch.

@profcarroll I’m really enjoying “Twidere X”. Prefer it to Metatext atm, but each to their own! But worth a mention and a check out! #TwidereX
@profcarroll it's so much better with Metatext. Can you please recommend a desktop app for Mac?
Mastonaut

Simple, elegant, and native Mastodon client for Mac.

@profcarroll @rmayemsinger doing a more full review?

Does it handle remote instances better than the web?

@tchambers not IMHO, remote instances are problematic (never want to leave user wondering whether anything is going on or it is just waiting for a response)
@rmayemsinger @tchambers @profcarroll I’m kind of wishing hoping that the developer of Tweetbot — the excellent 3rd party iOS client for the bird site — revives the app he once built for Mastodon. He seems indifferent so far, though. https://twitter.com/tapbot_paul/status/1588956036194570240?s=46&t=2YQiDh4zPlBrnRkLRMBMnA
Paul Haddad on Twitter

“I’ve noticed the # of people requesting an app for Mastodon is significantly higher than previous Twitter controversies.”

@profcarroll @rmayemsinger @tchambers (The fact that @paul has set up a server might suggest some evolution in his thoughts, though.)
@profcarroll I get some annoying “flashing” viz artifacts when my Home timeline refreshes in Mastonaut

@rmayemsinger Toot! is on equal footing with or better than Metatext.

‎Toot!

‎Toot! is a client for the Mastodon social network. It is beautiful, and full of character and whimsy. What makes Toot! special? - It is delightful. It is full of beautiful design, animation, amusing details and hidden treasures. - It is fast and robust. It caches data locally to let you read withou…

App Store
@rmayemsinger @profcarroll I’m digging Mac app Mastonaut. Free, Mac native design.
@MikeRoe what's better about it specifically, and thank you!

@rmayemsinger The interface is more similar to a standard Mac program than the web app, but I think they're both good, so it's a taste thing. The app is free, so it doesn't hurt to try it out.

I believe it also lets you run multiple accounts at once; I'm not doing that, but nice to have the option.

@profcarroll Does the PWA not work (or not work well) on iOS? I'm using it fine on Android (via Firefox).
@profcarroll thanks for this. Using Toot and agree. Much better UX.
@profcarroll I kinda like Metatext. Waiting for Mammoth to add more features.
@profcarroll Metatext looks good actually, I have just switched to that! I don’t want to pay for an app, and Tooot collects some data from the user that I did not like…
@profcarroll I was enjoying tooot but that privacy policy, ouch. On Metatext now and it’s not bad.
@profcarroll I am using Metatext and it works smoothly.
@profcarroll to me the Mastodon app’s look is more appealing than Metatext‘s. What functionalities do you miss in the „default“ app?
@tobi as an #admin I absolutely cannot wait for someone to build a dedicated app for #MastoAdmins
@tobi @profcarroll I don’t want to know how to code to follow topics I’m interested in - regardless of server. I did see an earlier post that said we should have the ability to follow hashtags & get translations as well - DON’T FORGET TO ADD UKRAINIAN 🇺🇦 & other Baltic/Balkan languages too.
@profcarroll this was the post I needed to read - thanks!
@profcarroll Thank you for the reccs, trying out MetaText & really like it so far.
@profcarroll How about one for Android?
@profcarroll Still getting my legs. Being an open source guy, I chose Metatext. So far so good. <w>
@profcarroll Kay, silly q: is it possible to “pin” my introductory toot to the top of my profile? Thanks, from a newbie
@profcarroll honestly, the best part of searching for the Toot! App on the App Store is how the fart apps are also included in the search results.
@profcarroll I’m using “tooot” right now - not bad!
@profcarroll - I'm currently using Toot! and love it much better than the current stock IOS app for Mastodon or even Mast, It allows for easy switching between servers (if you've joined more than one), can "pin" hashtags to follow and it has two cute #Pride-centric app icons.
@joesbrat67 @profcarroll The Toot app on IOS seems neat, but I just realized it has been a year since the last version. I hope it gets a little love this year. I like to support app developers, but I probably should have checked to see if it was still being updated before paying. Fingers crossed!
@joesbrat67 @profcarroll Are you talking about Toot (updated a year ago) or Tooot (updated 5 days ago)?
@profcarroll You can also use Pinafore.social its web based (so just put that into your browser and go  ) but when you use the share on ios to add to home screen it defaults basically to a full app interface, and i've been enjoying it since if nothing else i wanted continuity form my computer to my phone so i didn't have to learn multiple ways of doing things lol
@profcarroll Currently beta testing. I like it.
@profcarroll If you want to try one more, I‘m enjoying Mastoot by @libei a lot.
@profcarroll Does this risk getting a bit exclusive by throwing up technical tweaks? I'm reasonably happy with basic stuff, but for a Learner bumbling around at base camp, not comfortable with A levels so soon.
@profcarroll any recommendations for Android?
@JeanPhilippe I haven’t tried it but noticing folks say they like https://Tusky.app
