So, #Mastodon is „decentralized“. What does that mean? There are still central servers storing account info and the posted media, right?

@dotto Each server is independent of each other (data is stored via the instance you're a part of), however you can interact with other instances.

Think of instances like different email services. There's Gmail, Outlook, etc. Each email provider stores your data on their own servers, but you can still send emails from Gmail to Outlook. Mastodon is kind of like the central protocol that each instance has to abide by.

@jordan Love it! Thank you for the explanation! But this means, if one server goes down, threads could become fragmented, right?
@dotto Correct! Or even potentially risk losing your profile. It's why it's important to pick a reliable instance and choose one with a team that backs it with integrity.
@jordan Did you have reason to go with and would you consider to go on multiple instances?

@dotto I chose this instance out of pure relevance to what I do for work -- no other reason! I'm new here as well, so just getting a feel for how it all works too.

The nice thing is, you can migrate to another instance (you currently lose your messages, however) and take your followers with you. So in the worst case that this instance might disappear, you can migrate to another one. You can find the migration stuff in your profile settings if you're curious.

@jordan Thanks! That is good to know. I hope there will be a backup option too. So one could migrate even after a server went down.
@dotto For sure! Mastodon is completely open source too, so app integrations are endless. I'm sure it's only going to get much better over the new few months with the large influx of users!
