Good reporting on @Mastodon here, including asking critical, reflective questions like this:

“If so many people are expecting a Twitter-like experience, maybe it’s time for us to question our expectations about what social media is, what it can do, and whether we even want it in the first place.”

The Future of the Internet Will Be Nothing Like Twitter, and That’s a Good Thing

Mastodon is showing users a future beyond Elon Musk’s garbage fire, but there’s still a long road ahead.

@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice Yes, that was the stand-out sentence in that piece.
@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice yes, it is rare among the CNN’s et al. It occurred to me that Musk may be doing us all a favour, forcing us to rethink social media with the benefit of hindsight.
@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice I've said it for years, and I'll continue to say it - by far, the best social media experience I've had was Google+, the first couple of years, before they messed it up. I've toyed with the idea of building a clone, but it would either be a ghost town, or I'd have to figure out how to pay for running it, which seems like a little too much to take on.

@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice

"What would it look like if we completely re-engineered our digital spaces around concepts like community, privacy, and mutual care, instead of ad impressions and profit? ... What if the communities on that network built their own spaces, for themselves, instead of those spaces being built for and defined by ad buyers?"

Asking the big questions! Thanks for the share

@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice Not looking for Twitter. Just trying to figure it out.
@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice Twitter and also Meta have, after their "garagebox" start, always been about earning money no matter how. Sadly compassion has no algoritm.
@austinkocher @Mastodon @Vice Good on Vice for reporting it right.
