Yesterday I posted about worries re. moderation at mastodon.social/.online:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/on-our-policy-74436103

And asked the community to feed back about whether they'd like to do nothing, 'silence', or 'defederate'. The response was almost entirely in favour of silencing.

Today, especially after noticing that those two instances DO federate with an instance that hosts fascist content, we went ahead with that silence:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/74474015

Thank you, .art, for supporting a solid no-nazi stance. <3

@Curator I might not be on .art, but I'm really relieved to see this as I love the instance a lot. I hope it works out well for everyone.

@Curator I'm new to these situations, can I ask a question? I know little about how reporting and coordinating silence/blocks works.

When reports about these users and instances happen, do .social/.online get those reports?

Do we know if those instances have seen this and chose to ignore, or could they not know yet? Do we know if their admins have been alerted directly?

@chartier I have a screenshot from a discussion in their Discord where Gargron is talking about the block list of another instance saying that mstdn.io shouldn't be on there. A bunch of admins of other servers reply to him that they absolutely should because they're hosting fash. He knows. He's very aware. :)
@Curator Goddamnit Gargron.
@chartier ^ Everyone everywhere for the past five years 🤣 🤣
@chartier
To answer more generally, when a user reports a post/another user, they have the option to send the report to the server where the post originated, in addition to their own server, and sending it to both seems to be the preselected default.
@Curator
@Curator I definitely support the stance. I joined mastodon.online out of lack of knowledge and I'd like to migrate to mastodon.art. Does this page illustrate the path I'd take if I want to try and do so? https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/
Moving or leaving accounts - Mastodon documentation

Take your information and do what you want with it.

@Curator - fully support a no-nazi and no fascist stance. Thank you!!
@Curator What happens when a server is silenced? Can I follow innocent people hosted there? What happens to boosts? /gen
@HikaTamika It's all explained at https://www.patreon.com/posts/silencing-social-74474015 - you can ask me any further questions you have after reading that :D :D
@Curator TY! /gen
Are there any... concerns with regard to the software founder doing things and making choices .ART staff doesn't align with?
@HikaTamika Hmmmm nothing serious I'd say, no. He's been pushing back against implementing useful or security-centric things the community has been asking for for five years. I think what usually happens is the other devs working there kind of claw their way back to a middle ground.
@Curator I wish I could boost AND add a cw at the same time… Anyway. Good call!
@dltq You can screenshot it if you want, copy paste the text into alt text, then post the screenshot to a new toot with a CW and link back to the post ^.^
@Curator Sounds like a …. workaround. Thanks! 🦄But i need to figure if that feature request of mine is in the backlog already, and if it is, I can upvote it 🤓

@Curator

Hope it's okay to ask here:

I've been looking to move from mastodon.social for a while and this is the push I needed.

Can anyone recommend a good, small*ish* general interest server that doesn't federate with the fash?

(I want general interest cos I like to see a bit of everything, I get bored on single-interest servers.)

@uoou Totally fine to ask here :D I can heartily recommend mstdn.social, but it depends on how 'small' you want. They have 54k active users, so it'll be a much quieter experience than .social, but still busy enough to feel active and alive. I'm friends with the admin and one of the mods there, and they are wonderful, caring people that carry the same ethos as our community here.

If you want something smaller and cozier, sunny.garden are also lovely, admins also great, 900ish users. :)

@Curator

mstdn.social sounds perfect. And your recommendation carries a lot of weight. I see you working tirelessly for your community all the time. (To the point where I worry about your well-being a bit :))

Will make a short list and have a poke around.

Thank you!

@Curator @uoou
mstdn.social and mstdn.io have confusingly similar names
@Ember @uoou I can guarantee that they are absolutely run by different people, in the same way that mastodon.art and mastodon.social are separate.
@Curator I appreciate this, though as someone newly using the site & trying to learn about the details, I’m still confused as to how this exactly affects interactions. I did skim the Patreon post & another person’s guide, but still a bit lost as to how it all connects (or not). Admittedly I have trouble understanding new concepts, so this may just be a me thing.
@sygnin @Curator
According to the second post, changes are:
- The Federated feed will not show posts that originated on mastodon.social or mastodon.online unless you already follow OP, so you cannot find new people to follow from these two servers there.
- The Hashtag search will not show posts that originated on those two servers, unless you already follow the original poster.
- If you look up someone on those two servers by username in the search, you have to make an additional click.
@sygnin
Everything else is the same as it was.
@Curator Did I miss something?
@Anke @sygnin @Curator one more thing is that anyone from those servers who follows you will require you to manually approve their follow.

@sygnin @Curator I'm also new, so correct me if I'm wrong. But AFAIK, what it means is that you won't be able to see or interact with the users on this instance.

UPD: The Patreon post mentioned "silencing". Which basically means that you won't be able to see the content from that instance except for the users that you already follow

@notthebee @sygnin You can also follow new users and see their content, and you'll see the content of users you don't follow if someone you DO follow boosts it into your timeline.

People can also find you to follow you - you might see a lot of follow requests on your profile now from accounts on .social and .online.

In the 'big picture' it won't affect discoverability too much - you can read the addendum on the bottom of today's patreon post to see why :)

@Curator wanted to say thanks for hosting this discussion. i moved from .online based on this because as a new user, i wasn't fully aware of what i was doing when i signed up and just picked an instance. thanks 👍
@fairytaleteacup <3 That's awesome. Glad it was useful - and yeah, many people are in the same boat as you. It's problematic that those instances get pushed as the 'main' instances. .art suffers similarly; there are only two other art instances on joinmastodon.org, but there are LOADS of other art instances out there in the fediverse. joinmsato shows a tiny, tiny fraction of all available instances and that's problematic.
@Curator absolutely, as that's how i found what instances are open or not.
@Curator and thank you for looking after us (and also for asking our opinion on such a big issue!). Oh how I love it here  (capybara for emphasis and because I've been wanting to use one of these since they were released)
@Curator Since there was a bit of confusion about it, I can confirm I just saw someone on mastodon.social I follow boosting someone I don't follow, so that still works
@Curator I heartily approve of your stance - while still being stuck on mastodon.social for the moment. mastodon.art is currently closed afaik, are there other art/writing relates instances you recommend so I (and others) can jump ship?
@Curator sorry, saw the post with the rec about artisan.chat only now. Readinng before posting is not my strong suit 🤦
@Curator I just wanted to thank you for this. <Mental health sighing with relief>
@Curator Once again, many thanks for your hard work and commitment to a strong sense of values.
@Curator Has .social and .online been notified about the fascist content on that instance?
@Curator Thank you for making Mastodon a safer place. I owe you a big one. I love it here. ❤️💪
@Curator Is there a follow-up post about your change of mind? Couldn't find one on Patreon.
