Yesterday I posted about worries re. moderation at mastodon.social/.online:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/on-our-policy-74436103

And asked the community to feed back about whether they'd like to do nothing, 'silence', or 'defederate'. The response was almost entirely in favour of silencing.

Today, especially after noticing that those two instances DO federate with an instance that hosts fascist content, we went ahead with that silence:

Thank you, .art, for supporting a solid no-nazi stance. <3

@Curator I appreciate this, though as someone newly using the site & trying to learn about the details, I’m still confused as to how this exactly affects interactions. I did skim the Patreon post & another person’s guide, but still a bit lost as to how it all connects (or not). Admittedly I have trouble understanding new concepts, so this may just be a me thing.

@sygnin @Curator I'm also new, so correct me if I'm wrong. But AFAIK, what it means is that you won't be able to see or interact with the users on this instance.

UPD: The Patreon post mentioned "silencing". Which basically means that you won't be able to see the content from that instance except for the users that you already follow

@notthebee @sygnin You can also follow new users and see their content, and you'll see the content of users you don't follow if someone you DO follow boosts it into your timeline.

People can also find you to follow you - you might see a lot of follow requests on your profile now from accounts on .social and .online.

In the 'big picture' it won't affect discoverability too much - you can read the addendum on the bottom of today's patreon post to see why :)
