Almost indescribable how similar Masto is to using Twitter in 2010. Almost the same cast of characters is here?

It’s reminding me of that experiment where they bussed 80-somethings to a summer camp where everyone pretended it was the 1940s and everyone’s dementia immediately vanished.

(Sorry this is very dark!)
@robinsonmeyer i remember reading about that experiment; it was very hopeful!

@robinsonmeyer this place also reminds me of AOL circa '94, as it opened up to the masses and those of us there watched as the medium changed in real time (dial-up notwithstanding).

one of the things i like most about here is that an algorithm doesn't tell me what do.

feel like we have two poles: masto w/no algo that leads to humans recommending things i may like and tiktok that is all algo that leads to things it thinks i like.

@robinsonmeyer Totally. Ellen Langer does a great write up of that research. https://ellenlanger.com/books/mindfulness-25th-anniversary-edition/

@robinsonmeyer so nice to have a timeline that I can actually (fully) catch up on every day
@robinsonmeyer hadn’t heard of that experiment, would you happen to have any details on it? Tried google but didn’t manage to find it.
@robinsonmeyer it’s retro day at school! I’m dressing up as Naruto
@robinsonmeyer Wait, that really happened? Maybe we should bus a bunch of Boomers to a Woodstock recreation. Maybe their cllimate denialism will vanish?
@robinsonmeyer Oh no! Are you saying that Mastodon will become like Twitter. NOOOO!
