Paul BlinkhornMy "How Mastodon Works" discovery for today: If you use the advanced web interface, then do a hashtag search (eg. #archaeology'), if you then click on 'show settings' and click 'pin' on the column where all the toots with a #archaeology are shown, this will create a permanent extra column on your interface with all the toots with #archaeology on them. If you want to get rid of it, just unpin it.

And it looks like clicking on the settings (three little sliders) tag on the column exposes an "include additional tags for this column" toggle. Then you can add lists of tags to include and filter.

@RedEx1 note: the suggestions autocomplete leaves something to be desired. Hashtag completion is a weakness of the platform overall, but it's particularly buggy there.
