When following back people here, Iโ€™m noticing a lot of people havenโ€™t posted anything yet.

If you canโ€™t think of anything to write just yet, then do consider just reblogging (=retweeting!) good content that you see around. You could start with this post, for example, to encourage more people to start sharing content around here.

BTW, as we get the Bylines publications going on here, that will provide ample good news content for the community. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

@mikegalsworthy feels like everyone's just finding their way around and working out who else is here.

I'm sure it'll build, gradually.

@mikegalsworthy looking forward to my pals Yorkshire Bylines jumping on board
@mikegalsworthy Looking forward to Byline times on here.

@lordlinda @mikegalsworthy

Ditto. Though, and not to be greedy, I'm hoping the entire Bylines network will arrive.

A full house so to speak!

@KizzyDaze @lordlinda Oh I think we will! The better resourced ones (social media-wise) coming on first to work out the methodologies!

@KizzyDaze @lordlinda @mikegalsworthy

Much of the bylines network has migrated across already.

@TollyTB @KizzyDaze @lordlinda @mikegalsworthy

Hi Tolly. Second familiar name on here. Still finding my way around.

@mengraith @TollyTB @lordlinda @mikegalsworthy

Hello Paul. Suggestion: some of the names/faces familiar to you may be lurking in some of our follows/followers lists.

Take a peek. Hope you'll link up with more of your known buddies soon. xx

@mikegalsworthy It took me ages to find you on here ...I am trying to work out how the followers thing works.
Anyway glad I found @northwestbylines
@Kincavel @mikegalsworthy @northwestbylines I suggest using debirdify - it will look through your followers on Twitter and see if they have a Mastodon account. It will then let you download a CSV file you can upload on Mastodon to follow those people. https://pruvisto.org/debirdify/
Debirdify

This is a web app that helps you find out which of the people you follow on Twitter are on Mastodon/in the Fediverse already and follow all of them easily.

@mikegalsworthy But also - people here write an #Introduction post to say something more about themselves, with hashtags as appropriate. It works really well to connect with like minded people.
@SteveClough @mikegalsworthy and when you see an introduction from someone you want to promote, it's *really* valuable to Boost it! This not only shows it to your own followers, but it also makes it hashtag searchable on all the servers that your followers are on. (*Very important* to know this way that Masto differs from Twitter! Posts will only be found by a hashtag search if they have already been federated onto your server!)
@mikegalsworthy you can cross post from twitter
@mikegalsworthy @Riotgrandma72 Oh Carol! So happy to see you here! I missed the โ€œGood morning from the bunkerโ€ posts. Coffee?
@mikegalsworthy Hello Mike. It's all new to me. Just followed.
@mikegalsworthy What would we do without the Byline Times? For those who haven't already subscribed, please do - you're missing out.
@mikegalsworthy even when it says someone has posted, the posts aren't necessarily visible. That is because of the way federated servers work. Until someone on your instance of Mastodon is following that person, their posts are not visible to you. After someone on your instance follows them, their *subsequent* posts will become visible to you, but their historic ones never will. It's just the way the platform works and we'll have to adapt to it.

@deepfriedsteve @mikegalsworthy Yes, this is often why you won't see posts when you follow someone!

If I recall rightly, I think pinned posts are backfilled when you follow someone?

In any case, you can always go to that user's instance (e.g. https://social.coop for me) and view all of their past public and unlisted posts. You won't see any follower-only or direct posts though, since you won't be signed in.

social.coop

A Fediverse instance for people interested in cooperative and collective projects. If you are interested in joining our community, please apply at https://wiki.social.coop/wiki/Registration_form

Mastodon hosted on social.coop
@mikegalsworthy nice seeing you over here๐Ÿ‘โ˜บ๏ธ
@mikegalsworthy Thanks for the reminder Mike, I was so intent on getting things set up and finding people I know, that I simply forgot.

@mikegalsworthy would be delighted if you followed me back!!

#HintHint!

@mikegalsworthy I only came across this morning and am a bit shy. I thing one of yours was my first rethingy. Need to learn the language.
@joannegillam - "rethingy" ๐Ÿ˜‚ ... yup, new world, new language!
@mikegalsworthy looking forward to BylineTimes being here
@BennytheBall Yorkshire Bylines, Central Bylines and North West Bylines are all already on.
@mikegalsworthy have found them and are now following, thank you
@mikegalsworthy Great to find you here... Getting Bylines over here will be fantastic. Please make sure they get the CW right though!
@gruff 100% - don't worry about CW - we're all over that... and have a Zoom meeting tonight to discuss exactly that and other Mastodon culture & methods we need to make sure we adopt right from the start.
@mikegalsworthy Fantastic, I'll be so happy to see you guys over here. :)
@mikegalsworthy @gruff Bylines being a federated news outfit, the fit should be good. Are Peter J / Hardeep / anyone else over here yet?
@mikegalsworthy Good advice. Have just set up an account on here and in still the process of finding accounts to follow so it was good to see some folk that I recognised and trusted on the birdcage. This is my first post so hope it generates some followers.
@mikegalsworthy
Agreed, you beat me to it, but with a far larger audience! ๐Ÿ‘
@mikegalsworthy By "reblog" do you mean boost?
@JohnDal Maybe! Trying to work out the difference!
@mikegalsworthy the fediverse sometimes acts a bit weird when you first try to view someone's account. Most apps will give you the option to open an account or thread in a browser when you click the three dots at the top right of the app. This will open the full thread/account on it's host instance.

If you attempt to interact with a post from the browser it will give you a way to do it from your own account which will then import the relevant data into your own feed.

Once you follow someone all this stuff will happen automatically and you won't have to leave the app to view full threads started by that user.
@mikegalsworthy *that means sometimes it appears that people haven't posted but it's actually because you've never interacted with them.

Also, please consider setting up a bylines instance for your journalists. It will set an example of how publications can manage verified accounts, and make sure you're never subject to the whim of other admins.
@dave Hi Dave - we are actually considering that and bookmarking the relevant info. However, before committing such staff time & resources, we just need to get set up here, see the differences between servers/instances, get comfortable with guidelines, working methods, etc.
@mikegalsworthy you're doing right by not just jumping straight into it. The network is only just being forced to deal with adjusting to mass adoption so best practice and optimisations are being learned in real time even by the most experienced admins. It might be worth bookmarking this thread - https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/109308704512847392 - to see what problems people are facing and how they're dealing with them.

Most people here are pretty cool and will be willing to do their best to answer any questions you have. I maybe wouldn't ask Eugen @ mastodon . social if you can avoid it, but do follow him to see what's going on with the development of mastodon. After the last two weeks that guy needs a holiday, and a drink, and a medal, maybe a statue too.

Attached: 2 images What happens when you have your own Mastodon instance (just for you) where over 21,000 people follow you and when youโ€™re following over 4,300 people? You end up paying ~โ‚ฌ50/month for Mastodon hosting ๐Ÿ‘€ It also opens up interesting questions: what happens when a popular account joins your instance (hint: it will probably cost the instance maintainers quite a bitโ€ฆ I donโ€™t envy the mastodon.nu folks right now). #fediverse #mastodon

Aralโ€™s Mastodon
@mikegalsworthy Itโ€™s recommended that new folks start with the hashtag #introduction
Just a few words saying what youโ€™re doing here with a link back to your moniker on the old bird platform such as @SoLongFrank. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
@SoLongFrank @mikegalsworthy also a good idea to pin your intro to your TL (there's room for 4 more pins) so newbies can read it when deciding to follow
@SoLongFrank @mikegalsworthy great idea, how do you do the link to the other place please

@AlisonCitrine @mikegalsworthy

I think this will work Alison:
