I have this same question. How can a Trump-DeSantis war possibly be avoided? What's the hoped-for sequence of events?

Huh, I find the responses to this👆question somewhat surprising. Consensus seems to be that Trump will mop the floor with DeSantis -- mock him, drive him out, just like he did with Cruz.

Is this conventional wisdom? I guess I'm not so sure.

Last week I asked about a Trump-DeSantis war & the consensus was that Trump will win easily.

I wonder, after last night -- Trump's debacle, DeSantis's triumph -- if anyone has changed their minds. Certainly looks a lot more interesting now.

@drvolts It's a good question. I certainly don't expect much introspection from the Right, but if Trump announces a 2024 run and immediately starts going after DeSantis, I can see some schemers like McConnell deciding it's time to cut the Trump cord for good... god, such horrible people they all are.

@drvolts I think Trump is very vulnerable but not if DeSantis isn’t going to hit him hard. If it’s a dominance play focused on Trump’s crying loserdom, it will work. Full blast from Trump’s right.

My 2 cents: I think that Trump still wipes floor with DeSantis, unless he is too sick or in jail. The party establishment will be more emboldened to say publicly what they have thought privately for a long time, and try to dump Trump. But the MAGAites still rule the base.

@ross_macfarlane @drvolts agreed. We have primary systems now; leadership tried to stop Trump in 2016 too and it went nowhere.

@drvolts There are two audiences: the voters in Republican primaries, and the voters in the general election. The former still love Trump and may be persuaded by his usual ridicule campaign to reject DeSantis (lyin' Ted, low energy Jeb, little Marco) and the media will be delighted to cover all of that.

@drvolts A lot of this depends on how Fox — Murdoch — goes. They can do a lot to put their thumbs on the scale, even in light of the Newsmax surge we saw in 2020.
