It's tempting to start answers to new folks in the #SEO world with "Just do X", but it turns out that's nowhere near as comforting as I'd like. Let's try to reduce our "Just"s.

Just Don’t

ongoing by Tim Bray
@johnmu it is the sibling of “it depends”, isn’t it?
Personally I try to avoid it as much as I can, especially because how the tech stack is determining a website functions that obliges me to present solutions consistent with it, and always open to devs insights.
That proved also the best way to get along and being emphatic with the developers.
@johnmu and regarding new SEOs… we should always try to remember how newbie we were once, and if we would have liked to receive that kind of answer 😀

@gfiorelli1 Regarding "it depends" I think that took on a bit of a life of its own, I do think we tried to always follow up with what it depends on. For many questions, there is no simple single answer, and it's important to know that too.

That said, good natured fun at the expense of big-corps & me is perfectly fine. The memes are fun, and playing on them from our side is imo fine.

@johnmu @gfiorelli1 Having read John’s linked article I agree that “just” and “it depends” are not in the same category at all.

The problem with “just” is that it carries a dismissive, condescending tone that implies the hearer/reader doesn’t deserve a more nuanced or detailed answer.

“It depends” is simply being honest about the fact that not everything is black and white, and as long as you explain what “it” depends on, actually very helpful.
