I'm now thinking of moving to a different instance, maybe fosstodon (if it will let me in there)

Has anyone done this before? How does this work?

@mariatta During my previous attempt to enjoy Mastodon I had to move from server to server. I followed these steps from the docs.

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/

Moving or leaving accounts - Mastodon documentation

Take your information and do what you want with it.

@oliverandrich Thank you, I will attempt this now.
@mariatta @oliverandrich Not sure if old toots stay on the old instance though…
@s_gruppetta @oliverandrich From what I read, the toots don't get transferred, but the followers automatically follow your new account. I will be attempting this by EOD so we'll see

@mariatta Moving between instances wasn't too difficult for me (went from mastodon.lol to hachyderm.io). From the instance that you are moving from, you can export the list of accounts you follow.

From the instance that you're moving to, you would add the other account as an alias and import in the list.

Something like this: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another/

How to migrate from one server to another

With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.

@qlp I was reading that post but it seems quite outdated (written in 2019) so wasn't sure of its accuracy nowadays 😬

@mariatta I wish I documented the steps that I took when I migrated... although I think I ended up importing my list before I added the alias and completed the move.

So far, it doesn't seem to have caused any problems... yet 😶

@mariatta I dont know about the whole follows and posts thing but just moving is easy. I didn't have any problems doing it.
@mariatta I'm not sure fosstodon.org is a great choice, it has a rather strict rule set ("IMO" but I guess you can at least objectively say it's stricter than on most big instances), it restricts two biggest Japanese Mastodon instances... I personally am not so sure it's a great choice (at least for a main account) based on what I've found while looking into it at least.
@mariatta obviously will continue to follow you wherever you go since it doesn't really affect much unless you choose some instance that blocks my instance in which case afaik I wouldn't be able to interact with you (which is why I mentioned fosstodon.org's block of those big instances).
@mariatta 1. Sign up
2. Set up new account to receive migration
3. Start migration from old account
4. Export/import additional data you want to move (likes, bookmarks, follows, etc)
5. Set up alias on old account, shuttering it
6. Disable notifications on new account until follow notifications die down
