Recent mastodon influx be like: This party is amazing! Much better than that prior party!

5 minutes later: The party food should be served differently. 🤣

I implore other newbies to recall we’re coming into a home that’s been around since 2016, not an empty room. Part of why we love it is all the work people before us did setting up the party in a nice way. Maybe let’s defer to them a bit on norms?

Also, please use CW for political discussions, especially in the US this week. It’s better.

@Jonobie what's a good tag to use for US politics?
@Jonobie what's CW in this context?

@motek42 "content warning" - though it's better thought of a subject line. It's what puts stuff under a blur so someone can decide if they're up to reading it at that moment or not. You can do it by clicking the CW icon at the bottom of the posting screen.

So right as I went to bed last night, someone put up something about elections under one of those, and it was lovely to get to decide whether I wanted to be riled up right before going to sleep. :D

@Jonobie thank you for explaining! I was also wondering how people made those "tap to reveal" posts, so I got 2 answers in 1
@Jonobie The first two paragraphs is also how so many expats behave: Within weeks it goes from "omg it's awesome here" to "why does this country not work like what I'm used to".
@Jonobie should I be using CW for toots about Brexit and the Tories? I've linked my tweets and toots, should I toot first using CW? Hope I've explained what I mean properly.
@csav55 @Jonobie I’m new here too so I’m not the best person for advice but anecdotally I love CW/headers on political content because then I can choose to opt in and read (which I do often) or I can ignore if my mood is more early morning cute kittens and silliness. Sometimes I need fluff when the world feels too harsh.
@csav55 @Jonobie I asked the same questions yesterday.....didnt get any response...not sure what you're supposed to CW - also don't want to offend....maybe I should CW everything political
@Jonobie the benefit of observing and listening before acting.

@Jonobie Man, my heart break a little bit for the veterans around here having to deal with things being about to change *a lot*, just in vibe and tone.

On the plus side, you guys get to tell people about how this place used to be cool forever now.

@Jonobie hi you make such a valid point there and totally agree (I’m new so just finding my feet) no way do I have the audacity to criticise something I’m yet to understand 😂
@Jonobie As someone who has had the experience of migrating from one social network to another many times, I remember having to learn new social protocols and norms. My strategy is always to do more reading than posting until I feel like I've got the hang of how things are done.
@Jonobie please note many people here don’t have English as a first language and/or are not from US and do not use acronyms as much. But I’m happy though, just learnt a new one: “CW” 🤗
