alrighty! just migrated from mastodon-dot-social to mas-dot-to and WOW it was easier than i expected. sure, still several steps, but it worked exactly as described and the (*CRUCIALLY DESKTOP) interface was very straightforward. #twittermigration #meta https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another/
How to migrate from one server to another

With the sad news that KNZK was shutting down we thought it might be useful for people to have a refresher on the features that Mastodon has built in that make moving instances easy and painless. Backing up Your Data Data export If you are moving to a new instance the first thing you will want to do is to get a backup of all of your data. Thankfully this process is painless with the Data Export tab under the “Import and Export” page.

@VerbingNouns Thanks! What was the compelling reason to change?
@ogtrekker mastodon-dot-social is *massive* (150k++) and fairly laggy, but what prompted the change was that I know several instances I wish to federate with have outright blocked it because newcomers tend to "not get" mastodon and it's hard to moderate. I'm not actually a total newcomer, but the instance I was on in 2014 had to close. mas-dot-to is still very big (43k+), but afaict better connected to the smaller instances I'm interested in.
@VerbingNouns Thanks for the insight. I’m still trying to figure out where to finally land server-wise. My concern is a server being shutdown and potential loss. 🖖
@ogtrekker yeah, that's fair! I used to be on a small server that was closed (sort of accidentally no less). That's why I wanted a larger one. But, too large can be unwieldy and/or unsafe. On the other hand, it's a risk we take using anything on the internet! Link rot is a perennial problem everywhere.
