PSA:

There's Politics happening a few places around the world right now.

Please, /please/, place all political posts behind a content warning. It's actually in our Code of Conduct as a strong suggestion, but if we see anyone posting heavy political content frequently and without a CW, we will 'limit' the account (at the very least) so that the post don't show up on the public timeline.

Be considerate of the mental health of your online neighbours.

Expanded info:

Usually when people are talking about politics, no matter how mild, whether it's personal commentary on current events or a link to an article, it's placed behind a content warning that will read something like "USPOL, -" USPOL stands for US politics, and you can use a + or - to show whether the nature of your post is positive or negative.

A lot of people enjoy reading political commentary but won't boost it if it doesn't have a CW. It's not censorship, it's consideration.

@Curator What do you think about more expasive headline-like CWs?

"US Midterms: analysis by Whocares"

"<horrible thing> at <location>"

Etc. ?

@nikodemus Borderline but sometimes there's no avoiding it. You could not specify the 'horrible thing' but rather say 'upsetting content at <location>', for example.

The first example is fine though. It's brief, all the detail is below the fold.

@Curator Thanks for feedback!

(I've been suggesting headline-style to people partially because there seems to be less resistance to it, as they can see the utility of collapsing the feed into headlines even if they don't understand CWs otherwise - yet.)

@nikodemus Hah, yeah, that's good. Ease them into the idea.

@nikodemus @Curator

I like the idea of "headline-style" from the connotation that gives ME as a 60-yr-old-fart. But then, most of the headlines I've read in my lifetime pre-date the concept of clickbait.

[CW]KDO murders Al Gore[/CW]

Composing a headline used to be an artform requiring skill and empathy. The internet ruined that.

@nikodemus I'd still recommend including 'politics' or 'uspol' either as hashtag or word in the post's body as they're words that are more commonly used in people's filters than 'midterms' (which also can have non-political associatios). I'm not sure if including it in the CW is enough; I vaguely recall filters not getting triggered by the text in the actual CW.

(One of the features of the #glitchSoc fork of #Mastodon that I especially enjoy is how I can still have CWs auto-unfold unless they match any of my filters, rather than outright hiding the posts that match these filters. I do also like #Friendica's filter support that can automatically force a CW on incoming posts that feature certain keywords, but as that still can lead to posts sneaking through if it doesn't include any of your trigger words, I still advocate for people to include CWs themselves when posting.)

@nikodemus @Curator

"US Pol" + Headline-Style has worked all right for me for several years. "US Pol" is like the designated newspaper section and then whatever's after it is like the headline.
Though sometimes I'll get goofy about it and add something like, "My Weird Brain Is Weirding Again." :P
