I've been around the free/open source software movement my entire adult life, and I can't remember a moment quite like this spike of interest in Mastodon. In fact I'd written the fediverse off as utopian, too much like the failures of the past.

Never been so pleased to be wrong in all my life.

Perhaps the FOSS movement will be like the labour and socialist movements: waxing and waning in strength, reforming the system by maintaining the threat of exit, but always existing because the system generates its own opposition

@moh_kohn

The fediverse may be utopian, but I think it's a whole lot more viable than the "Metaverse".

@legalweasel oh yes, utopian in the Robert Owen sense
@moh_kohn I'm not sure what's been going on behind the scenes, but the platform seems massively more usable than it did just a few years ago, when the lag and time-outs were unbearably bad. The fact that national and regional instances seem to be becoming more popular is also really positive imo.
@moh_kohn I wrote this almost five years ago — there's a lot in it I would probably revise now — but I said "a mass exodus from private platforms in [Mastodon's] favour is unlikely to take place without a massive external stimulus". Many thanks to comrade Elon for giving us the external stimulus! https://www.conter.scot/2018/1/6/on-net-neutrality/

The US government's reversal of a decision to treat the internet as a "basic utility" has been attacked for being a boon for major corporations. But, in this long read, SSP national secretary Connor Beaton argues socialists should also be massively concerned, proposing we put forward our own bold vision for the internet...

@moh_kohn I'd toyed with setting up a server back in 2019 when the Scottish Twitter exodus was taking place. But I was put off by the resource requirements. So I also had similar thoughts that it could never be popular due to the resources required.
