🗳️ Vote with your great-grandchildren in mind…

Not knowing:

🤠 what they'll look like…

🗣️ what language they'll speak…

🛐 what religion they'll be…

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 who they may marry…

🌐 where they'll live & work…

🌍 And assume they'll need a habitable planet to live on.

All of my great-grandparents were born in countries that no longer exist today.

All of them spoke a mother tongue different to mine.

We have no idea what our descendants will be like or what they’ll need.

To help them now, the only safe bet is to help create a fairer, more livable world for everyone.

👉 A world based on universal human rights.

@andrewstroehlein A good chunk of Spain didn't speak "Spanish" in the 19th century.
@Jollyspaniard @andrewstroehlein I’d no idea - what did they speak?
@Piersyoung @andrewstroehlein Spain had about 7 different languages. All Latin based
@andrewstroehlein That’s beautiful and true, Andrew. I raise my glass to a world based on the recognition that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights – and that it’s our job to make sure that they remain so.

@lucdockendorf @andrewstroehlein
I must say - this place has a different feeling/vibe than twitter. I feel like surrounded by intellectual people with healthy empathy.

I asked on reddit - how will you celebrate your 100 birthday - and answers were gothic.

And here you all are giving wonderful replies.

@und_mamu @andrewstroehlein thank you! Also, I feel like things are moving at a more leisurely pace here. One doesn’t feel obliged to quick-fire responses like on the other website.
@lucdockendorf @und_mamu What do mean!?!?
@andrewstroehlein @und_mamu I can of course only speak for myself here.

@andrewstroehlein @lucdockendorf

The answers I got were pessimistic. Most people don't believe and don't want to live till 100. Only one or two said they will be playing with grandchildren.

@andrewstroehlein I heard a great story on the radio once by someone whose grandparents had lived in four countries but had always lived in the same village.

They were born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

@LeonardoDiOttio @andrewstroehlein Puts me in mind of Norman Davies’ ‘Vanished Kingdoms’, book I read a few years ago.
It's today for people arriving here and many places. It's my parents' generation for me. We're one human family.
@andrewstroehlein
@andrewstroehlein This strikes a chord. Two of my GGPs were in a similar position, stateless and with Nansen passports. Fortunately the UK was more welcoming then.
@andrewstroehlein Instead of voting, I'll start a family and make sure to pass on the values that my spouse and I have, just like my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents did. Then I won't need to vote for any sleazy old politician, because my family's future won't be in the government's hands.
@andrewstroehlein a bit on edge about the US elections - hope enough of them vote this way
@andrewstroehlein I always do think about my grandkids and what their children will be and vote looking at their possibilities!
@andrewstroehlein May I have permission to screenshot and share with my friends and family not here (yet), on closed Facebook account? If so, I will be grateful and do you want your name included?
@Sandyknauer Sure, no problem. And happy to be named. Thanks for sharing!
@andrewstroehlein well said. Really underscores just how much is on the line tomorrow…
@andrewstroehlein vote like their lives will depend upon it !

@andrewstroehlein
That sounds a lot like Rawls veil of ignorance!

But I like your way of putting it. It makes it less a sterile thought experiment and more tangible. It puts more skin in the game.

@andrewstroehlein I wish more people understood this.... it seems like some people vote as if it will only effect their team's "season" now.
