Finally tried an American deep dish pizza! It was very good and all but can someone explain... How is this not just a pie.

@jemmawei There are hearty people from eastern European stock in the midwest who settled in Chicago. Many of them are big and beefy guys. They created this thing and insist on calling it pizza, even though it takes an hour in the oven and actually is a pie.

But let's just call it pizza to humor them!

@jemmawei Speaking as a first-generation American, nothing shines a light on our culture as much as outside perspective. I laughed out loud and I will tell Dad, who will laugh too.
