Advice for new users, sometimes we tag CWs as "Meta," meaning content about the current controversy of the day on masto.

You may be wondering how you can tell the difference between meta commentary and meta the company, here is a handy way to tell the difference:
No one talks about the company.

@Ivafakename just burst out laughing, how wonderful 😁
@Ivafakename I think you should have CWed this post as meta.
@Ivafakename Thank you! I totally thought it was about the company (given their current nonsense) but that makes sense. 💜

@Ivafakename

can confirm, honestly it feels like a mistake. like if you named your company Company and didn’t realize you Went Too Far

@Ivafakename and if we did mention the company, we'd say Facebook, because it stole the name “Meta” and we dont respect its rebranding anyway.
@moonbolt @Ivafakename For the uninitiated, what are CW's?
@hakon @Ivafakename Content warnings. On the fediverse, we use them liberally to help others skip over without seeing and automatically filter out things that might harm them or that they need preparation before engaging with. Unfortunately I don't have a comprehensive list of commonly-CWed things at the ready, but you may be able to pick it up from watching others.
@Ivafakename Ha, that got a literal lol here.

@Ivafakename LMAO!

Fun fact: There once was an AR company that was called Meta. I tried their HMD and while impressive at that time it didn’t really impress me. They probably don’t exist anymore. So I kind of like that Zuckerberg rebranded his company to *that*.

That said, I call that Zuck-corp Facebook or Oculus depending on context. And I agree: It’s best to not call them anything at all because there are too many more interesting subjects.

@Ivafakename

Meta was the best thing to happen to the internet before Musk bought Twitter to impress his Russo Republican friends.

@Ivafakename "meta?? What's a meta?"
"NOTHIN', WHAT'S A META WITH YOU?"
*laugh track*
