guys will literally learn how to edit config.sys to free enough memory in msdos in 1993 just to play wing commander, but then get mad that the mastodon sign up process is too hard

@PadraigOCinneide that's a flashback I wasn't anticipating...

I remember having to edit config.sys and autoexec.bat to swap which driver loaded first (which meant at all), since I only had enough RAM for *either* the CD-ROM drive and joystick, or the mouse, but not both.

WC: Privateer was a wonderful game!

@PadraigOCinneide For some people, that's the truth.
@PadraigOCinneide haha it's pathetic isn't it? Twitter was a weird tech nerd site for a long time before it went mainstream and it's really not that complicated.
@PadraigOCinneide My personal record is over 720KB of conventional memory free.

@PadraigOCinneide Us - "Because it it decentralized, you have to choose an instance to get started."
Them - "Oh no this is too complicated!"

🤦

@kca I would love to learn how to edit config.sys, but to do that I would need a DOS VM, which I couldn't use because no speech.
@PadraigOCinneide but isn’t the purpose of progress to make things easier?
Ridiculing people who are uncomfortable about this is not the right way to get them on board.
If you’re not already a part of a silo that happens to have a fitting mastodon instance, it is quite hard to choose one.
Times are changing, and in general you don’t need to hack around in OS config anymore to get a game running…
@PadraigOCinneide lol I think it was X-wing for me 😂
