I'm going to try and remember to change the visibility to Unlisted for replies that I wouldn't want to see in my timeline. The kind that is short and has no context. Everyone can do whatever they want, I'm mainly sharing this so others know about the option.
@jon Replies to other people don't show up on local and federated timelines anyhow.
Unlisted replies only affects what happens with threads (replying to your own post). Good policy is to make the root post public and threaded replies unlisted: that way your not spamming the timelines.
